‘There is Celebration in the Village’

The Association for Supporting Contemporary Life (ÇYDD) got together with the children of Alihocalı Village of Adana’s Yüreğir county with its ‘There is Celebration in the Village’ project. The aim was to educate the mothers and the fathers as well as the children.

Between October 26-28, under the coordination of the Adana Branch and help from İskenderun, Osmaniye, Tarsus, Mersin and Antakya Branches, the children of the Alihocalı Village had fun and did a lot of learning.  ÇYDD put up a tent in the garden of the 60 student Alihocalı elementary school.

During the two days, the children learned coding, sang songs and used colorful cards in the English language workshop, and had fun making soap.  There was a science workshop. They worked on crafts and put together a school panel.

THE OPEN AIR CINEMA SHOWED THE FILM ‘TÜRKAN’

At the end of the first day, after dinner, there was the film ‘Türkan’ at the open air cinema. With an oral presentation, ÇYDD and Türkan Saylan were introduced to the village children and their parents.  In Saylan’s memory, the film ‘Türkan’ directed by Cemal Şan was screened. The play Deli Bayramı prepared by the Mersin Branch students was presented also.

ALL FROM AGE 7 TO 70 WERE INFORMED

Another activity of the first evening was children being taught by a nutrition specialist about healthy eating and importance of hygiene in food preparation.

On the second evening, Adv. Mahmure Nabioğlu talked about ‘Women’s Rights’. Tülay Üstündağ’s talk was titled ‘Understaning Each Other’.

During the two days spent together, numerous renovation projects were undertaken.  Repairs were done on some parts of the school.  The bust of Atatürk in the garden was repainted.  Two bookcases were mounted on two of the empty walls of the school.  A ‘Quiet Friend’ reading corner was established with cushions in the library. The protective enclosures for saplings in the school garden were painted with the help of the children who were provided with small paint brushes. New saplings were planted.

As the village celebrations were coming to an end, on a big white cloth the silhouettes of the children’s hands were painted with spray paint under the title ‘Memory of There is Celebration in the Village’
