The Association for Supporting Contemporary Living, The Princes’ Islands Municipality, and the Şişli Municipality jointly prepared a celebration for the 99 th Year of the Lausanne Peace Conference and Treaty at the Heybeliada İsmet İnönü House Museum.

The ÇYDD President Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksel, the İnönü Foundation President Özden Toker, and Islands Mayor Erdem Gül attended the celebrations, and ÇYDD Headquarters Executive Committee member Garip Başakçı was the presenter of the program.

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksel Yüksel, İnönü Foundation President Özden Toker, the Islands Mayor Erdem Gül, and ÇYDD graduate Emine Gökşen spoke about the importance of the Lausanne Peace Treaty for the Republic of Turkey.

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksel told the attendees that the Lausanne Peace Treaty was the document indicating the sovereignty and independence of the contemporary, secular, and the democratic Republic of Turkey and that ‘’Fully Independent Turkey’’ was declared to the world with this treaty. Dr. Yüksel said, ‘’Today we are very happy to be celebrating the 99 th year of the Lausanne Peace Treaty with you. Following the War of Independence, the Lausanne Peace Treaty was the award gained by the Turkish nation for its unbreakable fight and honorable stance.’’ Dr. Yüksel commemorated Great Atatürk and İsmet İnönü, and she brought to everyone’s attention the fact that with regional and global tensions and conflicts threatening us today, Turkey must own the Montreux Straits Agreement more than ever. She said, ‘’ ÇYDD will continue to work for a fully independent and contemporary Turkey that is secular, democratic and a nation ruled by law.’’

Retired Ambassador and Politician Onur Öymen also spoke at the event on how Turkey took its place on the world stage with the almost 100 years old Lausanne Treaty and what changed with the benefits brought on by the founding of the Republic of Turkey. The topic of Mr. Öymen’s speech was ‘’The Lausanne Victory Along the Way from a Collapsing Empire to the Modern Republic.’’


A considerable number of Heybeliada's residents joined the celebration. The program came to an end with the performance of Eda Derya Akkoyun who is an opera major student at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, İstanbul State Conservatory.
