Şeyma Kara Won the Right to a One Week Classroom Experience
Şeyma Kara will be part of a program that 80 students from around the world and
only 2 students from Turkey will be able to join.

OUR ŞİLE BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT ŞEYMA KARA SUCCESSFULLY
COMPLETED THE HARVARD UNIVERSITY’S ‘THE CROSSROADS EMERGING
LEADERS PROGRAM’ AND WON THE RIGHT TO EXPERIENCE A ONE WEEK
CLASSROOM BASED LEARNING IN DUBAI.

Şeyma Kara won the right to be a part of an in-person program that 80 students
from around the world and only 2 students from Turkey will be able to join.
Şeyma is a successful student of the ÇYDD Şile Branch and she is studying
Psychology and as a double major Humanities and Social Sciences at the Işık
University. She is outstanding in her academic studies and she does not neglect
the social aspect of her life. She is helping the younger students at the Şile
Branch with their English language courses. She is calm yet strong, inquisitive,
investigative, goal oriented and attentive. She is a junior at her university and her
grade point average is 3.83. Last year, with the ÇYDD EDUC8 Project she had
the opportunity to go to summer school in England. We are very proud of her.
We thank our two presidents who have worked hard for students from Turkey to
be able to join the Harvard program: Çekmeköy Volunteers Association President
Canan Bayraktutan and ÇYDD Şile Branch President Serpil Gür who gave great
support to the scholarship students. This year these teachers are planning to
reach all of ÇYDD’s scholarship students and help them to apply to the Harvard
Program.

We learn from the university’s website that, “The Harvard University Crossroads
Emerging Leaders Program (CELP) is a prestigious and fully funded career
development opportunity for students from across the world.”
During the first part of the program, courses are taught on line. This year the
program had over 7 thousand students. Some of the courses were
Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies, Introduction to Digital Humanities,
Strengthening Community Health Workers Programs, Fat Chance: Probability
from Ground Up.  With the Zoom platform, the students also get the opportunity
to have audio and video communications between themselves and with their
professors.

The students that complete the courses receive a HarvardX (Digital program)
certificate.

DUBAI PROGRAM: The students who have successfully completed the Online
Program are invited to apply for the classroom experience that is organized in
Dubai and taught by Harvard Professors.

This year 80 students chosen from around the world will be going to Dubai for a
week which was planned as March 31-April 2, 2020; however due to the
worldwide pandemic it is postponed to autumn 2020. A multidisciplinary
collection of Harvard courses and faculty will deliver a curriculum that combines
case studies, small discussion groups, and discussions on potential career paths
to the student participants.

The Crossroads Program brings together university students from Latin America,
USA, Africa, South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East to Dubai to learn from
Harvard professors in an intensive, multidisciplinary classroom-based program.
The program is open to first-generation college students from select regions,
welcoming ambitious young people who have overcome significant barriers to
higher education and may also be facing challenging financial and social
circumstances.
